PawedCast Episode 256: Philly & NYCFC Rewinds, Pride-Reign, Skinner Out, Atlanta Preview, and More

Orlando City snapped a three-game winless skid on Thursday at home against the Philadelphia Union and then went right back to not winning on Sunday at New York City FC. A triumphant night against a good Eastern Conference opponent left everyone feeling good but those vibes evaporated quickly with an utter beatdown in the Bronx. A lot of that was the lineup that took the field Sunday due to rotation, injuries, and international absences but not all of it can be adequately explained. We broke down both games and selected our Man of the Match for each.

The Orlando Pride had a tumultuous week with the resignation of Marc Skinner as head coach and his departure, followed by a 2-0 loss to OL Reign at home — the team’s fifth non-win in a row — under the also-departing Carl Green. The Pride finally named Becky Burleigh as the interim coach to see out the 2021 season with the team in free fall from first to seventh in the league in just five matches.

Both U.S. national teams were in action this past week. The women bounced back from their Olympic loss to Sweden by destroying New Zealand and then playing a frustratingly conservative 0-0 draw against Australia to get through the group. Alex Morgan scored twice — once in each game — but only one of them counted. The high-powered offense of the Netherlands awaits on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the men survived a tussle with Jamaica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals and will now face invited nation Qatar in the semifinals. The USMNT hasn’t played its best in this tournament yet but has done enough to survive and advance. Let’s hope Gregg Berhalter gets this young team going and perhaps set up yet another showdown against rival Mexico (or rival Canada).

Plus, Florida Cup is finally underway.

This week’s mailbag wants to know about Orlando City’s fullbacks, the future of Ali Krieger, and more. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for Atlanta United on Friday night.

That’s all for this week.

Stay safe and enjoy the show!

Here’s how No. 256 went down:

0:15 – Orlando City had a mixed bag in its two matches. We enjoyed talking about the first one but not so much the second.

37:00 – The Orlando Pride continue to play their worst soccer of the season, although this week it was understandable. Plus, the USWNT and USMNT are doing enough at the moment, but only just.

1:02:45 – Our mailbag, and prediction time for Orlando City against Atlanta.

PawedCast Episode 411: Orlando City’s Designated Players, CF Montreal Preview, and More

We discuss the roles of the various Lion attackers and get ready for the trip to Montreal.

As the Lions prepare to take to the road again for a Saturday night match in Montreal, we looked back at the first MLS game Facundo Torres, Martin Ojeda, and Luis Muriel started together. The trio of 2024 Orlando City Designated Players looked good at times, but still aren’t producing at a level one would expect. We discussed how their skills match, what their positioning was like against D.C. United, and try to figure out the best way to use the three players.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us trivia questions and whether or not I’m a Swifty. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward Orlando City’s trip to Montreal. It’s a difficult place to play, but the Lions have a chance to come home with points. We look at the key matchups in the game and make our final score predictions.

Here’s how No. 411 went down:

0:15 – Let’s talk about the three Orlando City DPs and whether they fit together.

14:23 – Our mailbagbox tests our trivial knowledge.

27:32 – A preview of what awaits the Lions in Montreal — plus, score predictions.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 39: Utah Royals Rewind, San Diego Wave Preview, and More

The Pride remain unbeaten and finally get their first 2024 win with a home date against San Diego looming.

OK, so we forgot to talk about the end of the SheBelieves Cup, and we recorded Monday night, so we were done before the news broke about the Orlando Pride waiving Kaylie Collins and Tori Hansen on Tuesday morning. Let’s just say we still had plenty to talk about, because the Pride won their first match of 2024 and stayed unbeaten at 1-0-3.

We discuss the Pride’s trip to Utah and how Orlando came home with all three points, which will hopefully become a springboard to a playoff run. But it’s a long season. For now, we are happy to break down the Pride’s road win and another solid defensive outing. We make our selections for player of the match and check back on our score predictions.

If the Pride’s offense has been a little slow to get started in 2024, well, help is on the way. We discuss Barbra Banda’s arrival in Orlando. Banda took part in her first training session with the Pride on Tuesday and is a player who can make the offense much more dangerous. She’ll also create more room for the likes of Marta, Adriana, Ally Watt, and Julie Doyle, so that can only help those players as well.

Then we dove into our mailbagbox, which asked us about Pride newcomers, goal differential, Marta, Star Wars droid battery technology, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

We finished the show with our preview of Orlando hosting the San Diego Wave on Friday night. The Pride have never beaten a California team at home, which is weird, because they have gotten plenty of results out west. Is this the year? The Pride already failed to beat Angel City at home, although a draw isn’t the worst outcome. We took a stab at predicting the score and provided our key matchups.

Here’s how Episode 39 went down:

0:15 – The Pride flew west, played at altitude, and brought home all three precious points from Utah.

22:49 The mailbagbox contained a wide variety of questions to seriously test our expertise. Wait, what expertise?

52:25 – A look ahead to Friday’s matchup against the Wave.

PawedCast Episode 410: D.C. United Rewind, OCB-Union II, and More

The Lions get back at D.C., OCB brings home another point from the road, and more.

The Lions came out of the bye week as if they were still on it, but Orlando City eventually got things going and came back twice to beat D.C. United in stoppage time at Audi Field. Nico Lodeiro came off the bench to serve as provider for heroics by David Brekalo and Duncan McGuire. After a slow start, the Lions have now gone three matches without a loss (2-0-1) and look a bit more like themselves. Now if those Designated Players would only start scoring, the team might really be making some progress.

We break down Orlando’s dramatic victory at Audi Field and make our selections for Man of the Match. It was nice to treat D.C. the way the Lions have been treated by United during the Wayne Rooney years.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us whether we prefer Coke or Pepsi and about Orlando City’s slow starts under Oscar Pareja. We kind of debunked the latter, actually. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward Orlando City B’s trip to Philadelphia. The Young Lions weren’t at their best, but they did come away with a 1-1 draw. The penalty shootout that followed the draw was epic, and unfortunately went the Union’s way, but it’s still always good to come home with any points from the road. Well done, Young Lions!
