PawedCast Episode 239: More Orlando City Preseason Results, Pride Roster Moves, U.S. Teams Split Fortunes and More

Orlando City played a pair of preseason matches in the last week and both were good results. We’re here to talk as much about them as we can, given the information we have, but the bottom line is that winning is better than not winning. The Lions no doubt got strong contributions from Kyle Smith, who was rewarded with a new two-year contract on Monday. We break down why this was a good move from the club and why teams need guys like “El Soldado.”

There’s more noise happening about Daryl Dike and potential suitors from abroad so we’ll talk about those latest rumors and what we think about them. The lad keeps doing good work over in Europe and he’s getting noticed. We would certainly hate to lose Dike, but his success there is a good thing for the club one way or another.

We also discussed what a knock to Nani might mean for the start of the season, Joao Moutinho’s recovery, and how the lineup might look for the early part of the schedule. We also discuss why the first three games suddenly take on even more importance, as the MLS teams that will compete in the U.S. Open Cup will be determined by their success in the early part of the 2021 campaign. That puts the Lions in a bit of a bind given some key absences due to injury, loan, and suspension.

The Orlando Pride have added and subtracted a player since our last show. We talked a bit about the addition of defender Ally Haran to the Pride roster as well as the news that broke Tuesday afternoon about Canadian midfielder Jordyn Listro heading to Kansas City via a trade. There are positives to take from both of these moves.

The USMNT and the U.S. U-23 teams had mixed results this past weekend and Orlando City players were involved in both. We discussed Dike’s performance against Northern Ireland and why we’re excited about the future of the national team. We also weighed in on the U-23 team’s failure, what could have been done differently against Honduras, and the silver lining that exists now that we know Andres Perea and Benji Michel won’t be missing a huge chunk of the season to play in the Olympics.

This week’s mailbag was eclectic. Folks are interested in grass vs. plastic surfaces, the Lions’ starting XI and tactics, and, of course, Ted Lasso. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

That’s all for this week.

Stay safe and enjoy the show!

Here’s how show No. 239 went down:

0:15 – Orlando City won twice against presumed Eastern Conference contenders in the past week. Plus, Smith’s salary likely went up, Dike’s price might be going up, and Nani is a bit banged up.

37:30 – The Pride played no preseason games this past week, so instead they signed a player and traded another one that they only recently signed. It’s the preseason. You’ve got to stay busy! Plus two different results for two USMNT squads.

1:13:09 – The mailbag is just about overflowing and we get an interesting variety of questions to answer.

The Orlando Pride suddenly find themselves on a winning streak to go with their unbeaten streak to start the season. Orlando dispatched the San Diego Wave 1-0 in a game that should not have finished that close, as the Pride dominated long stretches of the match, but largely wasted a 20-4 advantage in shots. We break down the match, check on our score predictions, and make our selections for Player of the Match.

Barbra Banda made her long-awaited Pride debut against the Wave. She didn’t score, but she had her chances, and she showed how adept she is at getting into dangerous areas. Banda should be a great addition to Orlando’s roster.

Our mailbagbox this week asked us about Brianna Martinez, former Pride players who might make good coaches, NWSL expansion, the biggest challenges on Orlando’s schedule, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. We’d also appreciate any ratings reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

We finished the show with our preview of Orlando visiting the Washington Spirit on Friday night. The Pride swept the regular-season series last year but didn’t fare as well in the Challenge Cup. Can Orlando keep things rolling in the regular season against a talented Washington squad? We provide our key matchups for the game and our score predictions.

Here’s how Episode 40 went down:

0:15 – The Pride finally got their first home win over a California team. We discuss.

18:15 The mailbagbox has many questions.

37:37 – Previewing the Spirit ahead of the Pride’s trip to Washington.

Orlando City’s regular-season series against CF Montreal is over already, and nobody won. The teams played to a 2-2 draw on Saturday night at Stade Saputo, with the Lions looking like the better side in the first half and the hosts controlling much of the second period. We finally saw some attacking players score their first goals of the season, too, so it was another positive step forward for the 2024 Lions. We break down the match, check our score predictions, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us how the Lions will utilize new player rules regarding Designated Players and MLS U22 Initiative signings. Our listeners also wondered what positions we would target in the summer transfer window. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward Orlando City B. The Young Lions went to Crown Legacy on Friday. The Carolina-based side made it through 2023 without a home loss, but that’s not going to happen in 2024. OCB went to Matthews, NC, and came away with a 2-0 victory. It wasn’t exactly one of the drunkest MLS NEXT Pro games we’ve ever seen, but we’ll take the result any day of the week. Congrats on the goals to Alex Freeman and Shak Mohammed.

Here’s how No. 412 went down:

21:19 – Our mailbagbox asks us about Designated Players and U22 Initiative players, as well as other stuff.

31:41 – OCB handled its business with a complete 2-0 win on the road at Crown Legacy.

As the Lions prepare to take to the road again for a Saturday night match in Montreal, we looked back at the first MLS game Facundo Torres, Martin Ojeda, and Luis Muriel started together. The trio of 2024 Orlando City Designated Players looked good at times, but still aren’t producing at a level one would expect. We discussed how their skills match, what their positioning was like against D.C. United, and try to figure out the best way to use the three players.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us trivia questions and whether or not I’m a Swifty. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

Finally, we turned our attention toward Orlando City’s trip to Montreal. It’s a difficult place to play, but the Lions have a chance to come home with points. We look at the key matchups in the game and make our final score predictions.
