Orlando City March Madness Bracketology: Round 2

New, 4 comments

We’re down to 32 players as you vote for your favorite Lion of all time.

Nick Leyva, The Mane Land

It’s time for the second round of voting as we continue to search for the most popular Orlando City player among readers and followers of The Mane Land. We started with 64 players from across both the USL and MLS eras of Orlando City SC and now we’re down to 32.

The first round was fun, but things always get more interesting as tournaments roll along. We saw a lot of blowouts and not many upsets in the two-day battle of Round 1. Chalk held in three of the four regions and the lowest remaining seeds as we enter Round 2 are 11th seed Mohamed El-Munir and ninth seed Aurelien Collin — both in our “East” bracket. Can these underdogs make a deep run? Well, things are about to get a lot more difficult.

In the closest race so far, Lewis Neal vs. Brian Rowe, we had a split vote. The goalkeeper had a few more votes here on our website, but Neal had 18 more than Rowe on the Twitter poll and ended up winning by a mere 11 votes. That’s almost as good as a buzzer beater.

While the first round was divided into two days, we’re doing Round 2 all in one go. All 16 match-ups will be available for voting from now until noon tomorrow and the winners advance to the Sweet 16, which we’ll post on Saturday.

There are some great battles to watch. In the “East,” I’m keeping my eye on the battle between fourth seed Jonathan Spector and fifth seed Tally Hall. That Joe Bendik vs. Luke Boden battle looks interesting too.

In the “South,” the big fight looks like a pair of USL Lions, with Jamie Watson squaring off with Dennis Chin. Can Watson upset No. 2 seeded Chinny?

Out “West,” the match-ups look a bit more easy to predict, but perhaps Sebas Mendez has captured enough hearts to upset original MLS Lion Cristian Higuita. We’ll have to wait and see.

Finally, in the “Midwest” region, it’ll be fun to see Dom Dwyer go up against his old USL teammate, Rob Valentino. Meanwhile, right back Scott Sutter will face his second straight left back opponent in Brek Shea after dispatching Joao Moutinho in the first round.

This is what the bracket looks like entering Round 2:

We’ll update the bracket again after each round of voting. The polls are available below. Please note that if you do not see the polls and are reading this site on your mobile device, that some services automatically strip out the polls, but — not to worry — you can still vote on our Twitter feed or here on your desktop or laptop computer.
