It may have been Pride Night at Exploria Stadium but it was the Chicago Red Stars who came out on top, winning 3-2 over the hometown Orlando Pride. Chioma Ubogagu and Marta struck for the Pride but Sam Kerr scored a hat trick upon her return from playing for Australia in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup to lead Chicago to victory in the first meeting between the teams this season.
Kerr didn’t need to provide a lot of individual brilliance in this match, however, as the Pride were prone to sloppy turnovers at the back all game long. Passes were off target or poorly weighted and easy to pick off, helping Chicago fire 20 shot attempts at Haley Kopmeyer’s goal. All three of Kerr’s goals came off of turnovers — two by defenders and one by Kopmeyer — who sent a short goal kick that was headed past the Pride defense for Kerr to run onto just before halftime.
Although the Red Stars got the better of the Pride on the evening, there were several standout moments for Orlando, with Marta’s return and some outstanding individual moves by Camila, who drew a penalty kick that helped pull the Pride within a goal in the later stages of the match.
We hope you enjoy these images from a high-scoring game at Exploria Stadium.
