Orlando City B is back and playing USL soccer once again. The Young Lions kicked off their first season in USL League One last night at home out at Montverde Academy against FC Tucson and, while the result didn’t go their way, it was the start of a new era for OCB.
The USL side is truly a developmental side for Orlando City now, developing academy players and getting them ready for the first team. The 3-1 loss last night might sound bad to those who didn’t see the match, but the Young Lions showed a lot of promise early before a goal against the run of play and a red card turned the game on its head. A potential penalty could have helped the Lions when they pounced on a wayward back pass and there was heavy contact between Tucson goalkeeper Philip Ejimadu took down Tresor Mbuyu in the box without getting any of the ball. There was no call and the chance evaporated.
Koby Osei-Wusu scored the team’s first USL League One goal in the second half, but by that time Tucson’s lead had already grown to 3-0 over the shorthanded Lions and despite out-possessing and out-shooting the visitors, OCB wasn’t able to draw any closer. There will be better nights for Orlando City B, but the most important thing from a developmental standpoint is that the players learn from the mistakes they made as they step up to the professional level.
Below are some of the images from last night’s match at the picturesque, waterside Montverde Academy stadium. We hope you enjoy them.
