Orlando City opened up the 2019 MLS season as it usually does — with a draw. And, as usual, the Lions had to come from behind to rescue the lone point. What is also not unusual is that a controversial call impacted the game in the opponent’s favor. This is just what Orlando City soccer is at this point. Hey, it’s good to have an identity.
New York City FC scored a pair of goals in the first half, only to see Chris Mueller pull one back on a free kick. Then, just minutes after Nani came on for his MLS debut and Dom Dwyer finally returned from a preseason quad injury, the Lions were level. Nani opened up the Pigeons with a wonderful through ball that sent Dom behind the defense, where he drew the attention of multiple defenders and goalkeeper Sean Johnson and unselfishly set up Tesho Akindele’s first Orlando City goal. Dom had no assists last year. This year he has one in just 21 minutes of play.
If not for an unheeded handball shout, the Cardiac Cats may have resurfaced to take all three points.
We hope you enjoy all the images from yesterday’s home opener.
