Dutch Eredivisie-leading PSV Eindhoven and Campeonato Brasileiro Série A side Fluminense took to the field at Spectrum Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Florida on Friday night to do battle in Florida Cup action. The game matched up both veteran and young players on both sides as PSV took a break from Eredivisie action and Fluminense prepared for the upcoming season in Brazil.
Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, with PSV winning an additional point in the Florida Cup standing by virtue of a 5-4 win in a penalty shootout, it was an exciting match in front of a few hundred rabid fans — many of whom were supporters of Mexican soccer who came out to see Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. Unfortunately for those fans, Lozano didn’t start, although he did come on in the 75th minute to a huge ovation.
PSV’s young players impressed the most. Sam Lammers scored an absurd goal after faking two defenders to the ground. Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen also had strong outings for the Dutch side. All are age 20 or under.
The fans who came out to watch were treated to an exciting match and the spectacle of a penalty shootout. Afterward, the vast majority huddled outside the stadium in an effort to get photos or autographs of their favorite players.
We hope you enjoy this album of images from the match.
