Coming off its best performance of the 2017 Gold Cup — and arguably the only good one — the United States Men’s National Team finds itself in the championship match against...Jamaica? The expected showdown with Mexico never materialized, thanks to the insanely good goalkeeping of Andre Blake and a late free kick goal by Kemar Lawrence on Sunday night. A complete performance by the Reggae Boyz allowed Jamaica to pull the 1-0 upset of El Tri and advance to the title game.
Bruce Arena has rotated his squad liberally throughout the tournament, which has worked out well, including in Saturday night’s 2-0 win over Costa Rica. That game was a 0-0 stalemate until Clint Dempsey came on in the second half, setting up a Jozy Altidore goal and then scoring one himself on a free kick. Arena will likely go with his best lineup, regardless of rest, as the USMNT tries to capture its sixth confederation championship.
The Jamaicans find themselves in their second straight Gold Cup final, with the U.S. taking part in its 10th overall. It was the Reggae Boyz who knocked the U.S. out in the semifinals back in 2015, so the Yanks will be looking for a bit of payback. You may recall that current Orlando City striker/midfielder Giles Barnes scored against the USMNT in that game, as well as Darren Mattocks. That 2-1 loss came in Atlanta.
Arena will look to stay unbeaten in his second stint as U.S. gaffer — he’s 8-0-5 since taking over for Jurgen Klinsmann. The United States holds a 14-2-8 overall record in 24 matches against Jamaica, going 11-1-3 on U.S. soil and 3-1-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. That loss came in the aforementioned 2015 semifinal. Bruce Arena is 5-0-5 against Jamaica.
Clint Dempsey tied Landon Donovan’s career USMNT goal-scoring mark on Saturday and will likely have an opportunity tonight to break that record.
