It is finally here. The long wait is over, and Orlando City hosts Atlanta United FC for the first time. It’s the first of back-to-back games for the two teams and Atlanta sits one point above Orlando City going into the first of the matches. Here’s hoping that the home field advantage gives the Lions the edge.
Just a reminder on how this works: we choose a craft beer from the country/state/city of our opponent and we include an appropriate recipe to go along with it. Of course, we also choose a Florida craft beer to complement our other recipe and to represent our Orlando City Lions here in the beautiful Sunshine State.
From Atlanta: 420 Extra Pale Ale, Sweetwater Brewing Co.
Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney went to school together in Colorado. After realizing that they were more interested in beer than studying, they “transferred” to the American Brewers Guild to complete their education. In February 2017, they officially began brewing at Sweetwater Brewing Company, and have taken the South by storm.
According to the brewery:
"Our most popular beer. 420 Extra Pale Ale is a tasty West Coast Style Pale Ale with a good hop feel to it and a crisp finish. First brewed on April 20th, 1997 this beer has developed quite the following in the Southeast. Drink em if you got em.”
Pair with: Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork. Given the game is Friday night, I decided to go with this slow cooker recipe. You can prep it tonight, start it Friday before work, and enjoy it during the match. Pale ales go great with most anything, and BBQ pulled pork is no exception.
Dave’s Recommendations: Coleslaw! This is the vinegar style coleslaw rather than the creamy variety.
From Florida: Full Moon Madness Porter, Tampa Bay Brewing Co.
The Doble family founded the Tampa Bay Brewing Company in 1995 in Ybor City, and have been a staple of the craft brewing scene in Central Florida ever since. If you’ve been doing it that long, you must be doing something right.
According to the brewery:
"A dark roasty porter body is the backbone for TBBC’s signature subtropical porter. This beer displays a beautiful blend of banana, vanilla and roasted malts, making it easy to drink, and satisfying on even the hottest Florida day. The Full Moon Madness marks the 20th anniversary of TBBC.”
Pair with: Slow Cooker Porter Pot Roast. To keep things fair for those of you choosing the porter, here is your own slow cooker recipe. Classic pot roast, but using some of the porter in the recipe. Enjoy!
Dave’s Recommendations: No side dish other than what is called for in the pot roast recipe.
