Hey everyone, welcome back! The Pride Pub doors are open, and you are cordially invited to take a seat at the bar. It’s time again to order up some of the best craft beers and carefully picked meals, so that you can enjoy Orlando City soccer in style. It’s Opening Day for the 2017 season, and we’re also christening the new stadium. It’s going to be an incredible event, and one that’s been too long in waiting.
Just a reminder on how this works: we choose a craft beer from the country/state/city of our opponent and we include an appropriate recipe to go along with it. Of course, we also choose a Florida craft beer to complement our other recipe and to represent our Orlando City Lions here in the beautiful Sunshine State.
From New York: Tangier Session IPA, Southern Tier Brewing
In 2002, Phineas DeMink and Allen “Skip” Yahn started a brewery in Lakewood, NY. With names like that, you know that these guys had some good stuff in mind when they started brewing. Years later, we get to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
According to the brewery:
Where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean is the ancient city of Tangier. This confluence has made Tangier a cultural waypoint for millennia. From Greek heroes to Cold War spies and uprisings, Tangier has inspired thousands of legendary stories. It is written that before his battle with the giant Antaeus, Hercules rested in a nearby cave. But where myths end, our tale begins. Tangier is brewed as a Session India Pale Ale with spicy citrus aromas and stone fruit flavors. These flavors, with the addition of lightly roasted malts and brilliant hop bitterness, make Tangier a beverage as refreshing as it is exotic. The approachable 4.6% abv yields more time to enjoy the synergy between the tangerine peel and spicy, citrusy, Azacca hops. Enjoy Tangier in celebration of your epic adventure.
Pair with: Sweet & Spicy Tangerine Glazed Grilled Chicken. Southern Tier recommended spicy foods to go with Tangier, so what better way to complement the spicy, citrusy tangerine taste of the beer than with a sweet and spicy tangerine glazed chicken?
Dave’s Recommendations: Grilled Potatoes with Roasted Garlic-Herb Dressing. I’m going to keep going with the recommendations from the source. Southern Tier recommended the spicy food, and the potatoes are recommended with the chicken. Enjoy!
From Florida: Ms. Mary Brown Ale, Central 28 Beer Company
We’re switching it up this year. Previously, we’ve used an Orlando Brewing beer in the first Pride Pub of the season. Well, we have a new stadium, and as such, we’re going to start with a new brewery. I’ve chosen Central 28 Beer Company, not just because their beers are excellent, but also because Co-Founder Dan St. Pierre is an Orlando City supporter.
According to the brewery:
Miss Mary Brown: 6.0% ABV, 22 BU
A big, rich brown ale with caramel and toffee notes, joined by hints of cocoa and toast. Earthy and spicy hop character provide a counterpoint to the slightly sweet malty body of this sturdy beer.
Of course there’s a story behind this beer, but I’ll let Dan tell it in his own words.
By the way, Miss Mary Brown is named after our Great Grandmother. She was the coolest lady, and I love her so much! My sisters and I never called her great grandma, or nana or anything like that. It was always "Miss Mary Brown”…
“Miss Mary Brown, tell me a joke!”
She was a funny lady!
Pair with: Easy BBQ Baby Back Pork Ribs. Dan recommended barbecue ribs for a tailgate, and when the brewer tells you what to have with their beer, you listen.
Dave’s Recommendations: Bacon, Cheddar, and Chive Biscuits. You’ll need to make them ahead of the tailgate, but I doubt anyone else will have them on hand. You’ll make quite an impression with these tasty biscuits.
There you have it, the first Pride Pub of 2017 to help you enjoy the first game of the 2017 Season. It’s been a long time coming, and I know you’re all as excited as we are here at The Mane Land. Vamos Orlando!
