The 2017 Florida Cup is over. A mere 90 minutes could not determine a winner between Brazilian Serie A sides Corinthians and Sao Paulo last night at the University of Central Florida's Bright House Networks Stadium in front of an announced -- and boisterous -- crowd of 7,500. The two sides had to settle the matter with a penalty shootout after a scoreless draw.
The Brazilian giants gave no quarter over the course of the match, with each team having a man sent off in the 19th minute of a chippy first half. Corinthians and Sao Paulo seemed to harbor genuine animosity in that opening half and you'd never know it was a friendly with all of the hard challenges, pushing, pulling, and bookings.
Both teams missed out on some golden opportunities, particularly Corinthians, which sent in attackers 1-v-1 against the Sao Paulo goalkeeper on two occasions in the second half but both players missed the target with their shots. Sao Paulo had the better build-up and possession play but Corinthians fashioned the more dangerous chances to score.
The final whistle blew without a goal and we headed to penalties, where Sao Paulo goalkeeper Sidão took center stage, stopping two of the first three Corinthians shooters. His counterpart, Cassio, stopped only one Sao Paulo shooter. When Sao Paulo forward Gilberto scored on his club's fifth shot, the match was over and Sao Paulo had won the shootout, 4-3, earning the 2017 Florida Cup FC Playoff title.
