MLS Re-Entry Draft Phase 2: What You Need to Know

What is all this stuff about phases and re-entry drafts? We've got the important information as it pertains to Orlando City while we prepare for today's latest roster-building opportunity.

Orlando City SC will select 20th in today's MLS Re-Entry Draft second phase, which starts at 3 p.m. ET.

It's the same pool of players as last Friday's first phase of the draft, but now teams can negotiate salary and are not locked into existing contracts. So you'll likely see much more movement than the three players that were picked last week.

Basically, teams have seven days to make a bona fide offer to the player they select. If the club and player can't come to an agreement, the team holds the right of first refusal for that player in MLS. That means that if the player wants to play in MLS, they have to come to terms with the team that holds their rights, or wait for that the team to trade their rights so they can try again with a new club.

Any players not picked up after today's phase become available to any MLS club on a first-come, first-served basis.

With that all said, is there anyone out there the Lions can use?

There are some intriguing players like Marvell Wynne and a few bigger names, such as Edson Buddle and Dwayne De Rosario. That's not to say Orlando City is interested in Wynne, Buddle or De Rosario. But this is a team that needs some depth and could use some additional experience.

Some guys like defender Danny O'Rourke or defensive midfielder Brian Carroll might be useful depth players, filling a role while being quite affordable. O'Rourke was downright cheap, making just $55K last season. Carroll made just over $185K. Here's the full list of available players.

Whether City goes with either player or someone else, today's phase two presents a much more likely scenario for adding an additional Lion to the pride than last week's first phase.

Oh, and the trade window opens right after the draft today.

Is there anyone on the list you'd like to see in purple next season?

UPDATE: Brian Carroll has opted out of the Re-Entry Draft. OK then.
