Orlando City may not have won either of its games last week but we’re still feeling pretty OK about the season overall. We break down a “good” loss and a “throw-away” loss and give you our Man of the Match picks for both games. We’re more bullish on the Pride after a road draw against FC Kansas City that came soooo close to being a win. We also discuss Tommy Redding’s call-up to the U-20 national team for the FIFA U-20 World Cup and the World Cup qualifier that Orlando City Stadium will host.

We’ve got a bit of a different kind of guest this week as mlssoccer.com writer Simon Veness joins us to tell us just what prompted him to write a book about Orlando City SC. He talks about his introduction to supporting his favorite soccer team and just how many hours of interviews his better half transcribed in the writing of “Defying Expectations,” as well as how you can get it.

After a brief tangent to discuss beer and how we Americans like to celebrate other countries’ holidays, we’ve got your key match-ups and score predictions for Saturday’s match-up between Orlando City and Sporting Kansas City.

Here’s how the show unfolded:

0:12- Orlando City fell twice on the road last week, but we’re not bent out of shape over it and we’ll tell you why. Plus, the Pride, Redding to the U-20 World Cup, USMNT coming to Orlando, and more.

47:43- Simon Veness hops aboard to discuss his upcoming book, what he learned while writing it, Phil and Kay Rawlins’ place in Orlando sports history, and more.

1:11:09- Our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Sporting Kansas City.

We’ll be back next week as we recap OCSC-SKC and look ahead to two more games in a busy part of the Orlando City schedule, plus Pride-North Carolina, OCB-Cincinnati, and much more.

Marta does Marta things and the Pride must shut down Mallory Swanson and beat Alyssa Naeher.

The Pride are getting used to adversity early in the season. A week after opening the schedule on the road, falling behind by two goals, and losing a player to a red card before coming back to draw, Orlando again faced a tough situation. The Pride were missing even more defenders (playing nothing but fullbacks on the back line), had a goal disallowed because of a foul off the ball just before it crossed the line, and conceded a penalty to fall behind again.

But Orlando rallied late again — this time with Marta working some old-time magic off a perfectly executed set piece just before the end of normal time. That goal lifted the Pride to a second straight draw that felt like a win. Hopefully these kinds of moments will pay off later in the season. Hopefully the Pride will also stop making their own jobs tougher.

We break down the 1-1 result against Angel City FC and make our selections for Player of the Match.

After our Angel City rewind, we dove into our mailbagbox, which asked us questions about Kerry Abello, Amanda Allen, referees, sportsmanship, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

We then presented our key matchups and score predictions for the Pride’s home match against the Chicago Red Stars on Friday. Orlando will need to contend with U.S. internationals Alyssa Naeher and Mallory Swanson to get a third straight result to start the season.

Finally, we looked at the Pride’s group opponents in the inaugural Summer Cup, which pits NWSL sides against teams from Liga MXF.

Here’s how Episode 36 went down:

0:15 – The Pride had a goal waved off but still managed to get a result at home against Angel City.

18:30 The mailbagbox is reaching new heights on this show.

35:50 – A look ahead at the Red Stars and the group stage of something called the Summer Cup.

PawedCast Episode 406: Austin FC Rewind, USMNT, OCB-Huntsville City, and More

The Lions pick up their first MLS win of 2024, and OCB comes home with five of a possible six points.

Despite missing some key pieces, Orlando City did what it needed to do (and pretty much whatever it wanted to do) in a 2-0 home win over Austin FC that was not as close as the final score would have non-viewers believe. The Lions controlled the game from start to finish and got goals from Jack Lynn and Nico Lodeiro without conceding one at the other end. In fact, Austin barely registered any tries for goal and only managed one weak one on frame late.

We break down a comprehensive victory over the newest team from Texas, check back at our score predictions, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox was quite full again. We answered questions about Lions as basketball players, great advice we’ve gotten, superstitions, transfer value, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

After answering the mail, we celebrated a five-star rating and review before diving into the USMNT’s victory over Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League. It’s always fun to beat El Tri. And holy moly, what a goal by Tyler Adams. Have a hit!

Finally, we turned our attention to OCB’s road match at Huntsville City FC. The Young Lions didn’t get the win, but they still brought two out of three points home to Orlando, making it five of a possible six from two away matches to start the season. It’s a great beginning for the Young Lions and we are here for it.

Here’s how No. 406 went down:

0:15 – The Lions are on the board in the win column! Here’s how it happened.

21:55 – Our mailbagbox is stuffed again and we have a new five-star review.

44:23 — The USMNT defeated rival Mexico to win a trophy and OCB added two more points in Huntsville.

It’s not going to be easy for Orlando City to stop the bleeding on Saturday. The Lions need a win but there are a lot of key players who will be missing due to international duty when Austin FC visits Orlando this weekend. We drop all the names of all the guys who won’t be available for the match against the Verde and try to figure out what the lineup will look like.

This week’s mailbagbox was super full, even though we recorded earlier in the week than usual. Well done, everyone! We answered questions about the NCAA final four, major sports league commissioners, whether Orlando City fans are hopeful or doubtful, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

As the mailbagbox was winding down, I went on a bit of a tangent owing to a sudden fundraising idea. Let us know what you think of it, and believe us, you won’t hurt our feelings if you hate it.

We then discussed OCB’s upcoming match on the road at Huntsville. Can the Young Lions make it two road wins in a row? Well, they’re going to be missing some guys, just like the senior Lions, but why not? Anything can happen when OCB plays.

Finally, we turned our attention to Saturday night’s home match, providing our key matchups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Austin FC.

Here’s how No. 405 went down:

0:15 – Here’s who Orlando City will be without when Austin visits on Saturday. It’s a significant list.

12:49 – Our mailbagbox is overflowing and I have a spontaneous epiphany about a potential fundraiser.

39:50 — OCB heads to Huntsville and our predictions for Austin at home.
