PawedCast Episode 64: Montreal Review and LA Galaxy Preview

It’s been a long time since Orlando City enjoyed a two-game winning streak and so we’re going to enjoy this one for as long as we can, even though we’ve got a trip to play the LA Galaxy coming up this weekend. That trip was made all the more difficult with this week’s announcement that Landon Donovan is returning from retirement to help the Galaxy the rest of this season. He’ll reportedly be available for selection on Sunday too, which has us pretty terrified, even if only because of the emotional lift he’ll give LA.

We break down Donovan’s return and give our key match-ups and score predictions for Sunday’s game.

But before that, we’ve got a lot to talk about. We give a complete blow-by-blow breakdown of Orlando City’s unbelievable 4-1 win at Montreal and the tour de force performance by substitute striker Carlos Rivas. Goals, penalties, sendings off and even an indirect free kick in the penalty area. This game had it all and we are happy to chat about it.

We also discuss the Orlando Pride’s 1-1 draw at Sky Blue FC and the very pointed comments by Ashlyn Harris about her teammates in the wake of that disappointing result, in which Alex Morgan had staked the Pride to a 1-0 lead. Then we get into the free falling OCB and discuss whether they can hold onto that last USL Eastern Conference playoff spot. It’s going to be tough.

Plus, the USMNT, Cyle Larin, Kevin Molino, the Hex, and more!

Here’s the rundown:

0:12- Orlando City with a huge win at Montreal and we discuss it in loving detail. All four goals, the weirdness, the red card, the indirect free kick, and more.

29:30- The Orlando Pride’s 1-1 draw with Sky Blue snapped a losing streak but extended a winless skid. But the tie was perhaps overshadowed by Ashlyn Harris’ post-game comments.

34:30- OCB seems to have lost the plot in their playoff quest but they are still above the red line. What’s the problem? We discuss.

41:12- The USMNT defeated Kevin Molino’s Trinidad & Tobago and both countries are into the Hex. We’ve got thoughts on the U.S. victory, CONCACAF qualifying, and the upcoming Hex.

48:00- Our key match-ups and final score predictions for Orlando City at the LA Galaxy are definitely affected by Landon Donovan’s return from retirement. Why is Don Ovan coming back? Couldn’t they get Hat Trick Rick, El Nino, or Spray Dan?

And that’ll do it. We’ll be back next week to break down the OCSC-Galaxy match and look ahead to the Columbus Crew. Plus the Pride, OCB, and more!

The Lions will be a lot closer to whole on Saturday night when the New York Red Bulls visit Inter&Co Stadium. Orlando City is chasing New York (and most other teams) in the standings early in this 2024 season, and a good way to claw your way to the top is to beat the clubs that are in front of you. The question is: How will the Lions do that?

Oscar Pareja has favored the 4-4-2 the last two matches and it has produced mixed results, but there’s no question it looked more cohesive last Saturday night against Austin FC. We open this week’s show with a discussion of whether Papi will go back to the 4-4-2 well for a third consecutive match or if the familiar and comfortable 4-2-3-1 will return with so many of the team’s international players.

After that, we’re joined by Mark Fishkin from the Seeing Red podcast. Mark was kind enough to stop by and provide all the New York Red Bulls information we wanted to know about. Big thanks to Mark for giving us his thoughts on Lewis Morgan, Emil Forsberg, Sandro Schwarz, and more.

This week’s mailbagbox asked us questions about OCB players, corporations teaming up to make alcoholic beverages, Carlos Rivas, how many shows we’ve done as a podcast host combination, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC, or hitting us up on Bluesky Social with that same hashtag.

After answering the mail, we turned our attention to the Lions against the Red Bulls on Saturday. We discussed their players to watch, provided our key matchups for the game, and did our best to predict the final score.

Be sure to rate and review our show wherever you get your podcasts. Remember, we’ll read any five-star reviews we get on Apple Podcasts on the next show.

Here’s how No. 407 went down:

0:15 – With his internationals returning, will Oscar Pareja stick with the 4-4-2 or go back to the 4-2-3-1?

9:18 – Mark Fishkin from the Seeing Red podcast hops on with us and gives us the scoop on the Red Bulls.

26:58 — Our mailbagbox overfloweth, and we jump on those key matchups and predictions for Saturday night’s game.

SkoPurp Soccer Episode 36: Angel City Rewind, Chicago Preview, Summer Cup, and More

Marta does Marta things and the Pride must shut down Mallory Swanson and beat Alyssa Naeher.

The Pride are getting used to adversity early in the season. A week after opening the schedule on the road, falling behind by two goals, and losing a player to a red card before coming back to draw, Orlando again faced a tough situation. The Pride were missing even more defenders (playing nothing but fullbacks on the back line), had a goal disallowed because of a foul off the ball just before it crossed the line, and conceded a penalty to fall behind again.

But Orlando rallied late again — this time with Marta working some old-time magic off a perfectly executed set piece just before the end of normal time. That goal lifted the Pride to a second straight draw that felt like a win. Hopefully these kinds of moments will pay off later in the season. Hopefully the Pride will also stop making their own jobs tougher.

We break down the 1-1 result against Angel City FC and make our selections for Player of the Match.

After our Angel City rewind, we dove into our mailbagbox, which asked us questions about Kerry Abello, Amanda Allen, referees, sportsmanship, and more. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We’d also appreciate any ratings reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we’ll find them easily and read them on the show.

We then presented our key matchups and score predictions for the Pride’s home match against the Chicago Red Stars on Friday. Orlando will need to contend with U.S. internationals Alyssa Naeher and Mallory Swanson to get a third straight result to start the season.

Finally, we looked at the Pride’s group opponents in the inaugural Summer Cup, which pits NWSL sides against teams from Liga MXF.

Here’s how Episode 36 went down:

0:15 – The Pride had a goal waved off but still managed to get a result at home against Angel City.

18:30 The mailbagbox is reaching new heights on this show.

35:50 – A look ahead at the Red Stars and the group stage of something called the Summer Cup.

PawedCast Episode 406: Austin FC Rewind, USMNT, OCB-Huntsville City, and More

The Lions pick up their first MLS win of 2024, and OCB comes home with five of a possible six points.

Despite missing some key pieces, Orlando City did what it needed to do (and pretty much whatever it wanted to do) in a 2-0 home win over Austin FC that was not as close as the final score would have non-viewers believe. The Lions controlled the game from start to finish and got goals from Jack Lynn and Nico Lodeiro without conceding one at the other end. In fact, Austin barely registered any tries for goal and only managed one weak one on frame late.

We break down a comprehensive victory over the newest team from Texas, check back at our score predictions, and make our selections for Man of the Match.

This week’s mailbagbox was quite full again. We answered questions about Lions as basketball players, great advice we’ve gotten, superstitions, transfer value, and more. Remember, if there’s anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the show, just ask us by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC.

After answering the mail, we celebrated a five-star rating and review before diving into the USMNT’s victory over Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League. It’s always fun to beat El Tri. And holy moly, what a goal by Tyler Adams. Have a hit!

Finally, we turned our attention to OCB’s road match at Huntsville City FC. The Young Lions didn’t get the win, but they still brought two out of three points home to Orlando, making it five of a possible six from two away matches to start the season. It’s a great beginning for the Young Lions and we are here for it.
